When a research fellow applies to the appointments committee for leave of absence, extensions etc., over and above what is their statutory right, the PhD committee will often be asked for an opinion or whether they will recommend the application. The DRU has opted to define their recommendations as a set of general principles to make it clear to everyone what the DRU's advice will be.
