Guidelines for R&D Groups at NMH

Guidelines apply to R&D groups engaged in scholarly research, artistic research, and educational development work.

Purpose

The goal of the R&D groups is to promote collaboration on artistic research, educational development work, and research at NMH. Activities should align with NMH’s research and development areas and support NMH’s strategic objectives.

The R&D groups aim to:

  • Strengthen collaboration at NMH and develop partnerships with leading R&D environments both nationally and internationally.
  • Be creative, ambitious, exploratory, and relevant to NMH’s artistic and academic pursuits.
  • Serve as spaces for learning, development, and inclusion, especially for staff involved in recruitment positions.
  • Provide guidance for NMH’s R&D areas in collaboration with the centers.
  • Initiate and support externally funded R&D projects.
  • Share their work at NMH, across the country, and internationally.

Structure and Organizational Affiliation

An R&D group brings together academic staff to collaborate on a specific theme, subject area, or project. Collaboration across departments and centers is encouraged.

The R&D groups are organizationally affiliated with the center where most members are based. Participation may positively impact merit evaluations. Groups must include research fellows and postdoctoral staff; including students, especially at the master's level, is desirable.

Staff may belong to multiple R&D groups but should generally have one main affiliation. R&D groups should comprise staff at various levels, with at least one member holding a senior academic position (associate professor or professor). R&D groups should consist of about 5–15 core members. External members may be included but should not exceed the number of NMH employees.

Role of the Centers

Centers need to be informed about group activities and maintain communication regarding academic and artistic growth as well as support requirements. Centers assist groups in developing themes, projects, activities, collaborations, and communication with departments and administration.

Requirements for Establishment

A short application must briefly describe the theme, the disciplines represented, the purpose, and the planned activities. Existing R&D groups may also apply for formal establishment. The head of the affiliated center approves new groups.
