In Need of Emergency Psychological Help

If a student speaks incoherently and refers to non-existent things or connections, they may be under the influence of substances and/or psychotic or about to become so.

What should you do?

Here are three options, from least to most serious:

  1. If the student wants help, you or the student's student contact (student.nmh.no) can call the student's GP together with the student and request an emergency appointment. It is advantageous to call early in the morning when booking an emergency appointment, as only a limited number is available each day. SiO Mental Health does not have emergency services.
  2. Call Oslo emergency medical service at 116 117 or Oslo Municipality's Social and Mobile Acute Service (SSA) at 23 48 70 90. SSA has a 24-hour phone line and provides assistance in cases of crisis, trauma, and accidents. It also offers follow-up if someone has been subjected to violence or abuse. SSA can provide advice and guidance and has a mobile response unit.
  3. If the student cannot take care of themselves or is a danger to others, call the police at 112.

What is psychosis?

Psychosis can make you hear voices others do not hear or have sensory experiences that others do not perceive. Feeling persecuted, experiencing chaotic thoughts, fixed misunderstandings, or inexplicable beliefs are also common. Psychosis can feel like losing oneself, and many experience restlessness and anxiety.
