How to create online meetings in Canvas?

Students at NMH relate to many teachers and subjects. A uniform system regarding online meetings will make it easier for students to find correct information.

NMH recommends that:

• Online meetings used in teaching are created in Canvas (our virtual learning environment), so that students find all their online meetings in Canvas.
• The teacher informs the students about where to find the online meeting via an announcement in Canvas.

Here are descriptions on how to do this.

1. Log in to Canvas.
2. Select the course in which the online meeting will be used.
3. Select “Zoom” in the course menu.
4. Select "Schedule a New Meeting".
5. If you want to use this meeting in all teaching hours in the course, tick the box to the left of «Recurring meeting», and select «No fixed time» to the right of «Recurrence».
6. You must select at least one “Security” option. For the easiest possible access to the meeting, it is recommended that you select «Only authenticated users can join ...». If you want to let the students into the meeting one by one, select «Waiting room».
7. Fill in the other fields.
8. Scroll down and select «Save».

To start the meeting, enter the canvas course, select “Zoom” in the course menu and «Start».

Tell the students where they find the online meetings with an announcement in Canvas, as follows:

1. Log in to Canvas.
2. Select the canvas course in which the announcement is to be made.
3. Select "New announcement" on the right side of the course home page.
4. Students get a lot of announcements, so make a descriptive title.
5. In the text field, tell them that they find the online meetings by going to the canvas course, select «Zoom» in the course menu and «Join».
6. Scroll down and select «Save».

The canvas course must be published and the students must have accepted the invitations to the course in order for the students to receive the announcement. Feel free to remind your students that communication with Canvas works best when they use the Canvas Student app on their smartphone, and receive notification for announcements.
