Start-Up Week: Terry Riley's In C – concert 2

At the Norwegian Academy of Music, first-year bachelor students begin with ensemble playing and choir practice from day one. The concerts on this Friday are the result of five days of collaborative playing and singing.

This is the second of two concerts – the first takes place in Georg Sverdrup’s Building at Blindern (University of Oslo) at 12:00.

In C, by the American composer Terry Riley (1935–), has become an iconic work in the contemporary classical repertoire and is considered one of the first pieces in the minimalist style. Composed in 1964, In C has since been interpreted and performed by numerous artists across a variety of genres.

The piece consists of 53 short musical phrases, each repeated randomly by the musicians in the ensemble, allowing for a high degree of individual freedom. The piece has no fixed duration, and the composer does not specify instrumentation or the number of musicians. In other words, this sets the stage for a unique performance as the school’s new students, with fiddles, electric guitars, clarinets, and trumpets, present yet another interpretation under the direction of Kjell Tore Innervik and John Vinge.
