War and Culture – The Boycott of Music

-

In an increasingly turbulent world, Norwegian leaders are compelled to make decisions that uphold their societal missions while balancing freedom of expression, academic freedom, and artistic freedom. This is the central theme of the debate in which the Norwegian Academy of Music (NMH) is participating during Arendalsuka.

Kilden og NMH

One of the early cultural institutions in Norway to take a stand was Kilden Theatre and Concert Hall, which cancelled a performance by an artist actively working in Putin's Russia. However, taking a principled stance through the boycott of music and musicians is not without challenges. Many musicians argue that such measures risk oversimplifying complex issues.

Participants in the debate:

  • Harald Furre – CEO, Kilden Theatre and Concert Hall
  • Astrid Kvalbein – Rector, Norwegian Academy of Music
  • Sigurd Slåttebrekk – Pianist, producer, and professor
  • Iselin Fjeld – Project manager, former journalist and presenter, ZERO (Moderator)
