About Student Absence During the Coronavirus

Despite NMH trying to make sure that as much of the tuition as possible takes place physically, Covid-19 will affect the academic year of 2020–2021.

Students and staff who experience symptoms of cold must stay at home. This means that some students might struggle to adhere to the mandatory attendance in specific subjects or that the instructor might have to change the education plans and host digital classes in some form or another.

During this extraordinary time, it is essential that we as an institution can manage to facilitate learning objectives for students in their respective subjects. We must also ensure that all instructors have a good enough basis for the assessment of student’s achievements in the subjects that do not have final examinations.

On 1 September 2020, the Academic Affairs Committee at NMH discussed how the Academy should handle physical absence during classes and practicals when the absence is due to symptoms of Covid-19. Similar issues related to external concerts as mandatory academic requirements and theoretical exams, were also discussed. The final decision made by the committee paves the way for how we may carry out our studies this academic year.

What does the committee’s decision mean for you as a teacher?

  • You should continue to mark attendance as usual in subjects where attendance is mandatory.
  • As far as possible, the achievement of learning objectives should be facilitated for students who cannot physically attend classes due to symptoms of airway infections through alternative forms of tuition or alternative academic requirements.
  • If you feel there is a need for alternative mandatory academic requirements or forms of assessment due to absence, please report these alternatives to Head of department by 1 October 2020.
  • Academic personnel must work together to find valid, feasible solutions within the resource framework already in place for tuition.

Academic Affairs Committee's decision of 1 September 2020

Read the decision carefully, and don’t hesitate to make contact if you have questions.

The Academic Affairs Committee hereby adopts, with legal basis in Temporary regulation regarding the execution of educations determined by the framework plan mv. In conjunction with the outbreak of Covid-19 the following adaptations and facilitation of tuition and assessment until 1 January 2021, with the possibility of prolongment until the end of the academic year, should the temporary regulation remain effective for longer than stipulated:

1 January 2021, with the possibility of prolongment until the end of the academic year, should the temporary regulation remain effective for longer than stipulated:

  1. Mandatory attendance in subjects remains the norm. If students cannot meet the minimum attendance requirements due to symptoms of corona, the subject coordinator/ subject teacher shall facilitate in such a way so that the student, through alternative forms of tuition and/or academic requirements can achieve learning objectives and be assessed in the relevant subject.

The student committee encourages teachers to facilitate tuition so that mandatory attendance can be met either through physical presence or through a digital alternative.

In those subjects where alternative academic requirements and/or alternative assessment can be expected to become necessary, the subject teacher shall by the 1st October 2020, have outlined these in such a way that the students understand what is expected of them in order to complete the subject. Alternative academic requirements and/or forms of assessment must be reported through the head of the department to the administration.
  2. For students of the Bachelor of Music in Music Education and Master of Music Therapy programmes who have practical experience as part of their education, all infection control restrictions must be adhered to, even if this results in absence. The supervisor, coordinator and hosting institution should discuss ways of allowing the student to complete practicals in a responsible way.
  3. For subjects with external concerts as mandatory academic requirements, the solution may be to have the concerts on school premises in those cases where external venues are not possible. The concerts may also be closed performances that are digitally recorded. In these cases, students themselves are responsible for documentation/recording.
  4. In subjects assessed through written school examinations, the examinations shall be changed to digital home exams.

The Academic Affairs Committee encourages all academic and professional personnel to cooperate in finding methods of tuition and forms of assessment/examination that are suited to this situation.
